ICBW: 2010 Status

Last year, Indy Comic Book Week took the community by Twitter and we really showed what the independent community can do. It was very successful and we are very proud of the stand we took as a community.

Many of you have asked if we are planning on holding ICBW again this year. Unfortunately we will not be able to. There are a lot of reasons for this, but they all tend to fall under permutations of one: last year, all of us were either full time freelancers or unemployed otherwise, and had an abundance of free time to spend on the maintenance of the site, blog and publicity. This year is, sadly, another story. Currently the entire team are slaving away at day jobs and we simply don't have the man hours to pull the event off right now. What we are trying to do, and at this point we can only say we're doing our best, is to turn the old website into a resource hub for Indy creators. The blog is currently frozen, with all old posts preserved, but no one currently has access to it to update things.

Hopefully we'll be able to put the event on again some other time, but right now it would simply take more resources than we have. We encourage you to speak with your local comic shop about showcasing your local comic community. Do not let this year's absence of ICBW hinder you in putting your own comic forward for the world to see. We are independent, go out and be heard.

Good luck, and keep fighting the good fight. If you have any questions or want to pick our brains about something, don't hesitate to email. You will hear from us again.

It Doesn't End Here!

ICBW was a mixed bag for me - it was great to be part of, but it almost unravelled at the nth hour, when my delivery of books was delayed and I had to wait until nearly 6pm on the 30th for delivery.

Luckily most of the stores that were part of the event were happy to honour the orders that they had placed, and I was able to get the books out in time for the last two days of the official Week...

But it doesn't have to end here...

Indy Comic Book Week was full of amazing books by talented creators, all of whom showed that some gumption and a little omph can get a book out there. To the organisers, I doff my hat in eternal gratitude, it was a joy to have a deadline and to be a part of.

However, indie books are a year round thing - it showed that it doesn't end with Diamond, but we shouldn't stop there.

Indie books are, for me, where the interesting stuff is happening. Unhindered by the constraints of schedules and continuity, it's where - when we try not to beat the big boys at their own game - we all experiment, grow, develop and stretch our artistic wings. Some of it works, some of it doesn't - but at least we're trying!

And so we should look to the new year - 2010.

One thing that may be of interest to you all is the UP FAIR - Lexington, November - a "fair designed to celebrate independent creators"

First off, we would like to thank everyone who helped make Indy Comic Book Week as successful as it was. We've had some positive feedback so far and in general people really seemed to have liked the event. Enough to maybe make it an annual thing. Thanks to the creators who put out books and pimped us on blogs, twitter, and facebook; you guys really gave us a strong spread of books to present to retailers and fans. You guys really blew up the twitter and blogverse with ICBW. Huge words of Thanks to the retailers who took the risk and carried our books on their shelves. This event could not have happened if it wasn't for you guys taking in so many books. And thanks to the fans for coming out and supporting independent books; this is the age of self-publication and you guys showed us that it's a viable part of the industry. This would include thanks to the bloggers and podcasters who had us on to talk about ICBW. And finally special thanks at Ka-Blam, ComiXpress, Haven Distrubution, and Tony Shenton for giving us the support and means we needed to really make this happen. So to everyone, bravo and thank you!

Secondly, we at Space-Gun Studios have something we call the "Debrief". We usually do this after every convention at dinner where we go over what worked and didn't work at the show. And for ICBW, we would like to include all of you in this conversation. Points of conversation are usually this:

What worked (why did it work and how to expand on that)
What didn't work (why didn't it work, can it be fixed or should it be ditched)
Ideas for next time

We would like to hear your honest opinions. If you are reading this post, we want to hear from you. We may not be able to respond to each person/point but we promise to read everything that comes in. Last Day of Indy Comic Book Week!

Well, today is Tuesday January 5th 2010, and the last day of the first INDY COMIC BOOK WEEK! So, how did it go? Let's get a postmortem recap of the event: Retailers, how did the books sell for you? So, the books finally arrived on Wednesday 30th, at 5:15pm (great!).

I managed to get all the orders sent out in the post the following morning, and also to get copies into House of Secrets in Burbank - where I also managed to get a copy of One Night Stand -, and Universal Comics in Studio City.

I want to send a big thank you out to all the stores that I listed in my last post, for honouring their orders and helping and supporting ICBW - the stumble at the last hurdle was a little tough for me, but the book is out there now!

Hope you all had a wonderful start to ICBW - and remember, it isn't over until Wednesday!

Comiket is the largest dōjinshi convention in the world with over 500,000 attendees and a phone book of exhibitors. Dōjinshis are Japanese self-published works that usually refer to comics and novels. This year's even at Tokyo Big Sight is being held December 29-31. It's going to be a huge indy movement on both side of the Pacific. The ICBW Team believes that comics are universal no matter the language and region. In the tradition of Bad News Bears, Karate Kid, and The Mighty Ducks comes Bamn!

The title character Bamn is a former World War Wrestling superstar who was unceremoniously booted out of the federation. The story picks up a few years later after his fall from grace. Disenfranchised, drunk, and living in his car, he stumbles across Art and Ian, a pair of wide-eyed twelfth graders who seem to be the only fans he has left in the world. Art and Ian invite our reluctant hero to their clumsy little backyard wrestling fed. There he meets a group of teenage misfits whose deficiencies in wrestling technique are just as noticeable as their passion for pro wrestling. While there, he soon discovers that the local high school wrestling team has been bullying them for years. Just in time for their final months before graduation, Bamn takes it upon himself to mentor the motley crew of wannabees on the finer points of pro-wrestling and self-defense. In the process, the kinship that develops between Bamn and the kids reminds Bamn what it really takes to be a champion.

The story takes place in the city of Sunny Hills, a city devoid of both sun and hills. It's a city wrought with crime, corruption, gang warfare, an economic recession, and litter. Money is tight and everyone is doing what they need to, to survive.

This is the story of Drystan Striker and his girlfriend, Liza Lambert; two down and out bad asses. The two wake up one morning to find that the rent is passed due and bills are piling up. Worst of all, there is no food in the entire apartment. Drystan must leave on a quest for his local grocery store and brave the dangers of BLOODY HILLS: corrupt police, yakuza school girls, metro sexual fashion elitists, disgruntled garbage men, and angry landlords. Each group is out for respect and money.

This is the story of MFS. A city where all its inhabitants, no matter how frail, are always up for a good fight!

A chance encounter brings Bamn to a group of teenage fans who have long-idolized the has-been wrestler. Wanting to impress Bamn, the kids invite him to their backyard wrestling show. Unfortunately, the only audience they attract is the group of bullies that comprise their school s amateur wrestling team. Bamn arrives to end a confrontation between the kids and offers to teach the backyarders how to fight back.

Hey all, G.p. Bonesteel here to say that I am throwing my worn out cap into the proverbial comics market. I currently have four mini-comic titles out there on the shelf.

Coming in at 32 pgs there's Ice Cream which is a short story about three kids who gets passed by by and Ice Cream truck and how they manage to get it to stop.

In the right corner coming it at 52 pgs there's Aliens: First Encounters which is the first part, in a four part series. The story revolves around an a space ship that lands out in the mid west and the trouble that is brings.

Then there's the 20 pg hero, The Surviving Life of Hanze Eneffer. It's the story of a lonely office worker looking for a relationship and the reality the he finds.

And the returning champ coming in at 32 pgs, Abortion Andy. This comic has two stories in it, the first being about Andy, a percocious little fetus out to spread the word of abstinence to the youths that he meets. Then there is the story of Cupid and his efforts to make a man fall in love on Feb. 14th.

Omnitarium in Time for ICBW

Just a quick message, firstly to say thank you to all the stores that have put orders in so far for issue one of Omnitarium - we're well on our way to selling out the first print run!

Secondly, I will be working very hard over the next few weeks to get books to stores in plenty of time for the event. Separately, they helped shape the world as we know, but together they are truly unstoppable!

When a living statue of Josef Stalin attacks New York City, the team is put to the test and it may take more than they bargained for to bring this "iron man" down... Perhaps the help NYC's friendly neighborhood-- But that would be spoiling it!

This is the premier issue of The Unstoppable Force, and is going to be limited to 100 copies in the DFW area, for now. The book will also be available on IndyPlanet for internet purchase, but only for a limited time. The first is a one shot in our EX OCCULTUS series called BADGE OF LANGAVAT. Ex Occultus is a globetrotting, serialized epic combining elements of Indiana Jones, H. P. Lovecraft and The X-Files as it follows the exploits of adventurer and fortune-hunter Francis Wakefield, the gruff and grizzled Englishman with a tortuous past, and his protégé, a young man only known as Hollander, as they journey through the arcane in search of treasures and fortune, righting wrongs as they go. BADGE OF LANGAVAT takes place in 1864 Scotland, and follows Francis Wakefield and fellow occult hunter Fergus Duff as they investigate the disappearance of children from nearby villages. Their hunt leads them to a forgotten castle belonging to a family of undead, cursed werewolves who have nefarious plans for the taken.

Hey folks.

Today I started calling the ICBW shops that have signed up to participate, and I was amazed how many of them haven't spoken to any of us ICBW creators yet. It's getting down to the wire now, so it's time to start making contact and time to start mailing out books (if you're going that route).

Another common feedback I've received from store owners is that they were hoping they'd have some sort of online ordering page where they could browse our books and place an order for how many copies they'd like. Maybe this is something to think about for 2010 (assuming this becomes an annual event).

What Planet Is This? Preview Pages

There's a lot of sci-fi books being thrown around for Indy Comic Book Week, and, if you guys are anything like me, that's a great thing. There can never be too much science fiction.

A while ago I introduced my Indy Comic Book Week offering, a Sci-Fi-Noir-Comedy called "What Planet is This?" It's coming along nicely, and I think it's about time to show you guys some pages. Here are the first three pages (I believe clicking will give you a full view):

Don't worry, the story doesn't stay indoors for long, I couldn't wait to draw spaceships, asteroid belts and star fields, and you can bet there's plenty of space action in this story.

The story will be 14 full color pages, but I'm throwing in some bonus material, of course. Enjoy, and a big thanks to the Space Gun crew and everyone else involved in making this week happen!

Good News/Bad News

Well, it's not so much bad news as it is a change of plans. There's just no way I'm going to finish Dash Bradley and the Flying Fortresses of Death in time for ICBW. Especially since the more I get into it, the more I want to keep adding pages. So DB&TFFD gets bumped because I really want to take my time with it. I'm still working on it and will have it done in time to debut at Staple and it will be awesome.

But there's no way I am going to miss out on ICBW, especially considering all the awesome attention it's been getting thanks to the fine ICBW crew and the rest of you guys spreading the word like crazy. So instead of DB&TFFD I'll be printing a collection of my 24-Hour Comics Day trilogy, The God of Rock. Part 1 (The God of Rock) was done in 2006, Part 2 (The God of Rock Strikes Back) was done in 2007 and Part 3 (Return of The God of Rock) was done just last month. Above is the cover for the GOR collection. I hope you guys will dig it.

Here it is, the cover for BRETHREN: Beginnings, the first issue in the much anticipated mini-series from creator Anthony Hary & A.N.A. Comics. While the book is already available through Indyplanet.com We are happy to have it on the shelves of retailers for Indy Comic Book Week!!

Anthony Hary here & news is out and you may have heard, but it warrants repeating. The last week of the year, Diamond is not shipping any new books to retailers. This opportunity is being deems the ‘IT’ moment for independent creators and a movement has started called: Indy Comic Book Week. With new comic book Wednesday, being all about Indy books and their creators, it’s going to be fun!!

Hermit Hill comic books arrive!

My order of Hermit Hill comic books have arrived! My printer for this project, Ka-Blam, really came through for me again. The books are high quality prints of my comic strips and they really look crisp and clear. I'll be shipping copies out to retailers probably the first week in December to be sure to arrive in time for ICBW.

Each book has a full color cover with black and white interiors, 20 pages and a cover price of $2.00. I'm offering these to retail shops for FREE (up to 3 copies each). What is a good cover price for my book?

With the discussions we've had with retailers, the general censuses is that your book should be priced no more than what the mainstream books are charging for their standard monthlies. So a standard 24-page color issue should be priced at about $3. And please put your cover price on your cover.

So then how much should I be charging stores for my book?

This is the big question. Stores are looking for at least 50% retailer discount when it comes buying a book from you. The smaller the discount, the smaller the chance they will be carrying your books on their shelves. This is a pretty standard practice in retail businesses and is something that they will more than likely not budge on. We creators must understand that they are running a business that has to operate within a practical and profitable business model.

Wait a minute, then how the hell am I suppose to make money on this book?! My print cost is way above 50% of my cover.

Unfortunately for the most part POD services are not suited to work within the standard retail model. However, Indy Comic Book Week was not created with the intent of making money. The intent was to take advantage of a shipping loophole created by the holidays. Our goal is to put indy titles with your name in front of a wide audience. Many creators are looking at ICBW as an opportunity to gain new readers who will pick up future books and creations.

Okay, so what sort of deal will shops be looking for when it comes to carrying my book?

The two main methods are consignment and direct wholesale. More on that can be found here.

Will retailer pay for shipping (and return shipping)?

More than likely no, they will not. You can ask in a professional manner if they will, but if they say no, then either pay for shipping or move on to the next shop. Do not be an ass about it and welcome to the business side of comics.

I'm terrible at this marketing thing. How should I contact stores about carrying my book?

An email and a phone call for out of state shops. Be polite and professional about it. Do one email, one phone call, if you don't get a response, move on.
Present them with all the information that they will need to make a decision about ordering your book. So that means give them the title, description, content rating, retail price, and ordering price. This will keep communications efficient and short. There are several invoice templates online for you to use.
Best way of contact: walk into the store with a copy/preview of your book and a business card. Say you are a local creator looking to take part in Indy Comic Book Week during Diamond's No-Ship week. This will help build a working relationship between you and the shop.

How many shops should I contact then?

The best answer is as many as you are capable and willing to. Though you will get the most feedback and luck with shops in your local area. Dealing with stores outside of your driving radius becomes a huge undertaking with little return. If you want to expand your contact coverage, be prepared to face obstacles (making contacts, shipping books, working a sales contract, returns).

What's the best way to ship my books to stores?

Why are you not including digital comics and online retailers in ICBW?

Indy Comic Book Week was created to take advantage of a specific shipping/holiday loophole that directly effects the brick and mortar retail stores. With the short amount of time between Diamond's announcement and the actual date, we decided to focus on collaborating with physical shops to take advantage of the fact their shelves will be empty of new releases that week.

Dash Bradley & The Flying Fortresses of Death Preview!

Omnitarium to print!

All, very quick update and a note of interest to all printing for ICBW.

Omnitarium issue one has gone to print - the digital proof as passed inspection, the pages are in the right order, and my ICBW print run is in place and ready to go.

I actually placed a couple of orders - the first being a big, bulk order for local stores and comps, private sales etc, the other being a smaller order for those non-local stores listed with ICBW that have orders currently placed. The reason being that when I placed my big order, using the ICBW discount code, I was given a shipping date of 12/21 - when not using the discount I got a date of 12/11 - those ten days will prove helpful in my getting the books to stores in time for 12/30. It should also be noted for those of you placing orders and using the code that 12/21 seems to be a default date with that code.

ICBW: Ka-Blam Discount

We've been in discussions with Ka-Blam about ICBW since very early in this process. After a lot of back and forth the Ka-Blam guys came up with an excellent way to help all of us get books printed for this event. Ka-Blam is offering ICBW creators a printing discount for books being put out for Indy Comic Book Week. The details/requirements for the code are as follows:

20% off on a minimum order of 50 comics (or 20 trade paperbacks)
Order must be placed by Dec 4 with payment by Dec 9
We guarantee delivery in time for the event (US orders only)
All other standard Ka-Blam terms, policies, and procedures apply
Offer expires on Dec 5

Now, I'm fairly sure that the ship deadline for them only gets the books to you by the 30th, so if you need to get books to a store out of your area be sure to factor that in with your print run deadlines.

This is very generous of Ka-Blam and I'd like to take the time to thank them for assisting us in this process. This will help a lot of creators get books printed up to be shipped out, and that's something I think we can all get behind.

If you are an independent creator who isn't signed up on the blog, let me explain how to get the benefits of this discount. First you must sign up as an ICBW blog member; this means you are in the process of releasing an independent book to retailer shelves for Indy Comic Book Week (Dec. 30th) and wish to promote that book here on the site. Then of course we'd want you to actually promote that book somehow here, preferably through previews of the art and story. Deadlines and POD

Sooo... I hope everybody gets that there will be ONE order I send in to Ka-Blam, and doesn't miss the deadline (December 4).

I do have to admit that I've not really gotten involved with how distributors and retailers use POD. I stick the books up at places like Lulu, and just send 'em there when they contact me.

I USED to try to work with them, but they want me to buy the books first and ship it to them (WTF?). The books are already up at wholesale on Lulu, including the full Desert Peach collection, and that's where I leave it to the happy little customers. They buy lots of them, and Lulu throws the money into my account. If the retailers want to get into the money loop, all they have to do is buy the same books and mark 'em up a bit. If they don't want to buy 'em, oh, well, that's a few more customers from their shop who go to their convenient laptop and get 'em direct. I mean, I love the stores, but I'm the bride and the customers are the bridegrooms. As much as we LIKE the yentas, they don't get to come on the honeymoon.

Barnes and Noble is squalling about getting cut off, but hey, they're not paying their bills. They USED to, but are showing signs of internal problems. Oh, well. There's always more yentas.

Amazon's Createspace is working hard to make the books available at wholesale for retailers (Lulu figured it out a decade ago, but I guess Amazon is kinda... slow...), but in the meantime, the customers can buy them. As an author, I'm one of many using many different POD companies, and if they make it at all hard or me or my customers, we just go off to somebody who wants to get out of the 18th century and into the 21st. Createspace is realizing this. Amazon TRIED to yenta us, but the weddings are being set up all over the net, with income streams, and anybody tries to gate-keep is just going to be cut out of the money.

There ARE up-to-date retailers who make it easy for customers to get their authors, but it's definitely a growth industry at this point.

Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers that ICBW is about the 21st century. It's a test for this year, and one I hope will work.

Saluting the ICBW flag

Okay, I've done done it, per instructions; I've contacted all the shops on the ICBW site with the following message. Unlike so many authors who have simply left the shops in the dust, I really really love bookstores and shops. I don't want them to go away. So I'm making a real effort to include ICBW in my messages and networking with my readers. Including putting up the logos at my websites. I want my funny little shops! Don't let them fizzle under the weight of the on-lines (well, I love me some on-lines, they roll in the money left and right, but can't I have BOTH? Please?).

Sadly, I'm beginning to have the sinking feeling, as even big bookstores go under and chain distributors find themselves hard-put to pay their bills (mostly from their own stupidity and arrogance and hopperdness, even sadder - and I wasn't talking about Diamond, which is, after all, just our weeny niche distributor), that this is a losing battle, but when was I one to back out of the fight for something I love? We need a flag. Or JACKETS.

My readers left for the internet when the distribution systems began to falter -- I make money but the shops don't -- but like so many authors I love the traditional shops and stores. Help me bring my customers back to the stores we all know and love.

Okay, I know you've already seen the image before, but here is the final cover - logo and all.

I wanted to share this with you because tonight work is being done on the final page of the book - all the art and lettering is complete, the credits page is done. All that remains is an after-word, giving a little insight into where the idea for the story came.

Hopefully the book will be on its way to Ka-Blam in the next couple of days!
